ELLIO Fine Art proudly announces Witness Trees + Indelible Structures, a solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed photographer, Osamu James Nakagawa, presented in conjunction with the 2026 Fotofest Biennial.
In his ongoing projects Witness Trees + Indelible Structures, Osamu James Nakagawa investigates the histories and legacies of Japanese American incarceration during World War II. Both bodies of work preserve the visual memory held within landscapes and structures quietly resisting erasure over time. Drawing on his identity, rooted in both Japan and the United States, Nakagawa explores the memories inherent to places and societies from the perspective of an individual in the ongoing flow of history. The exhibition features large-scale black-and-white prints alongside a contemplative installation of smaller prints, inviting viewers to engage as witnesses themselves.
At a time when political power continues to suppress the truth inconvenient to them and erase difficult histories, these structures and landscapes persist as witnesses. They remind us that the past leaves traces that demand recognition, however fragile or obscured.
On March 7th, ELLIO will host curator Dana Friis Hansen with Osamu James Nakagawa for a discussion about the exhibition. Doors open at 11am; talk will begin promptly at 11:15am. Exhibition reception on March 20th, 6pm-8pm. Both events are free to the public.
